Funding. Submitting Your Idea.

What types of companies do you invest in?
We are interested in looking at ideas in all fields associated with technology. Please review a list of our current investments to get a sense of the types of companies we prefer to work with.

At what stages of a company's development will you provide financing?
We provide seed and early round financing for software and communications companies. We will occasionally make later round investments in highly successful technology companies already backed by other venture capital firms with whom we have prior relationships.

How much do you generally invest?
Our recent investments have ranged from $3 to $15 million, but it is possible that we may invest outside this range in special situations.

Do you prefer to work with companies in your geographic region?
Like most venture capital firms, we prefer to invest in companies located near our own offices. For earlier stage businesses, we prefer ones located within a one-hour plane flight of our Bay Area or Southern California offices. This increases the amount of time we can spend assisting them. For later stage companies, we are comfortable investing anywhere in the continental US. If we receive a promising proposal which is well outside our region, we often will bring in a local partner with whom we have previously invested.

What is the process for submitting my business concept?
If you wish to submit a business plan to be reviewed for funding, please mail it to either our Menlo Park or Pasadena office, and be sure it covers the following:
  • A description of your core product or service
  • An analysis of your market, including the leading player(s) and why you think you can establish a dominant position
  • Bios of key management
  • Financial information
  • Key partners and customers
  • Advisors and board members

Who will review my submission?
Clearstone Venture Partners realizes that preparing an organized business concept takes considerable time and effort, which is why we give consideration to every idea submitted. The Managing Directors review and discuss all submissions, and collectively assess each one's merit and compatibility with the strengths of our firm. Therefore, it is not necessary to direct your idea to any one particular individual at Clearstone. However, if you were referred to Clearstone by someone, it is important that you include that information in your cover letter.

Will you sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA)?
As a matter of policy, we do not sign NDAs.

If we have an interest in moving forward with your proposal, we will contact you within 10 business days after receiving your submission.

Will I be able to talk to someone at Clearstone about my idea prior to submitting it?
Because we carefully review every submission we receive, we must spend our time in the most productive manner possible. While we certainly would enjoy the opportunity of talking with each entrepreneur prior to submission of an idea, it is not possible for us to do so.
