PASADENA AND MONROVIA, CALIF., JANUARY 21, 2003
Phasebridge Inc. and Unitek Miyachi Corporation (UMC) announced today
the signing of an agreement whereby Phasebridge will license certain elements
of its optical component manufacturing technology to Unitek Miyachi, which
will, in turn, develop a standardized platform for true automation of
key fiber-optics packaging processes to commercialize the patent-pending
Phasebridge optical mount and process technology. This technology eliminates
the need for any post weld processes such as laser hammering or bending,
enabling significant manufacturing yield improvements over the current
state of the art. The Phasebridge optical mount technology lends itself
to use with laser welding as well as and other attachment techniques.
"Jointly, Phasebridge and UMC are well positioned to revolutionize
the photonics packaging industry by commercializing this innovative solution
for robust and cost-effective welding of photonic components. This technology
enables reworkable single laser beam welding of photonics components,
still with high final positioning tolerance and high production yield.
Phasebridge's patent pending optical mount technology combined with UMC's
industry leading laser welding, materials joining, and process automation
technology will enable high yield packaging and manufacturing automation
for high performance photonics applications," said Ronald T. Logan
Jr., Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of Phasebridge.
Pat Jackson, Unitek Miyachi's President and Chief Operating Officer,
added "We are uniquely poised to change the way the industry aligns
and attaches fiber optics; the marriage of our technologies will result
in a more robust production process which is much less complex to manage."
UMC's fiber alignment and attach equipment utilizing Phasebridge's patent
pending optical mount technology, will debut at the 2003 Optical Fiber
Communications (OFC) Conference, in Atlanta, GA.
"UMC is really excited about the commercial possibilities Phasebridge's
alignment technology offers. The deployment of Phasebridge's novel alignment
technology in component mounts for fibers and lenses will result in a
much more robust process that can be implemented using equipment that
costs a fraction of the present state-of-the-art machines." said
Mark Rodighiero, Vice President of UMC's Laser and Systems and Axia Systems
Nathan Woodard, Ph.D., Phasebridge's Vice President of Engineering and
inventor of the Phasebridge technology added, "Our technology is
well suited for fiber attachment applications in photonic packages. It
is part of an ongoing effort at Phasebridge focused on innovations enabling
the building of cost effective 'Micro Optical Benches' that will offer
high yield, low cost methods for building optical benches in hybrid modules
employing highly diverse materials and components."
